Stop, Panic Attack! – An FAQ

Panic attacks can strike at any time or any place. For people who are prone to them, they can rule their lives. For those who have had more than one panic attack, the fear that another will occur can be debilitating. Here is an FAQ on stopping panic attacks.

FAQ #1: What does a panic attack feel like?

A: During a panic or anxiety attack you can feel a range of feelings, both mental and physical. You may feel that the world is closing in on you. You might feel dizzy. Your heartbeat will likely be much, much faster than usual. You might feel a tingling in your chest. You may sweat. You may want to lie down and at the same time lose your ability to concentrate. Also, an acute fear of dying accompanies the panic attack for some people. Caution: If you do have a panic attack, be sure to remove yourself from a situation whereby you might be of a danger to others (such as driving a car).

FAQ #2: What causes panic attacks?

A: Physiologically, panic attacks usually involve an excess of adrenaline suddenly entering into your system, in combination with a number of other related factors going on in your body. The precise cause of panic attacks is still under study, but the cause does seem to vary from person to person. Some panic attacks seem to come on unexpectedly. Other may be triggered by a traumatic event, such as a car accident. Still others might be situation-specific, whereby the attack is triggered after a certain pattern of circumstances arises for the individual.

FAQ #3: Are panic attacks common?

A: Yes. The Merck Manual indicates that about one-third of adults experience a panic attack each year. Some people, however, have these attacks more frequently and can experience them many times in a given year or month.

FAQ #4: Should I avoid situations that cause them?

A: The common wisdom seems to be that eventually you should try to face situations that tend to trigger your panic attacks so that you can overcome them as triggers for the attack. However, this should be done with caution since you do not want to unnecessarily put yourself through a panic attack. Ask your doctor about this.

FAQ #5: How can I stop one?

A: Stopping a panic attack is not easy. In fact, they can seem to feed on themselves, whereby the more you try to control one the more it takes control. Panic attacks are difficult to stop sometimes because the attack itself causes a series of negative mental states in the person having the attack. Those negative mental states in turn keep the body (e.g., the adrenal glands, sweat glands, heart, breathing, etc.) in an agitated state. This vicious cycle can often be broke by relaxing, doing breathing exercises, and creating positive thought patterns to counter the negative mental activity that the attack can create.

Panic attacks can be one of the scariest experiences but do not always seem to have an obvious cause. This mysterious quality can actually make them even more feared, thereby making them harder to overcome when they do occur. Be sure to take control and do not let your panic attacks run your life. There are ways to overcome them.

Anyone else have problems with “panic attacks” during pregnancy?

Trouble breathing, dizziness, feeling like you’re going to pass out, heart feels like it’s working really, really hard. And it typically lasts for just a few seconds. Though sometimes it lasts longer but in a milder state.

Is this pretty typical? Do you know what it is?

Is it possible to have anxiety and panic attacks without depression?

I swear I don’t feel depressed, but I do suffer from panic and anxiety attacks when I’m in public. People accuse me of being depressed though because they say they go hand-in-hand. But I truly do not feel depressed. Is that possible?

Tips for Panic Attacks

If you are suffering with panic attacks you will know how debilitating they are. Anyone who has experienced a panic attack will generally say that it is one of the most intensely frightening, upsetting and uncomfortable experiences of a person’s life. Panic attacks can be as short as 1-5 minutes, whist other times they may sometimes form a cyclic series of episodes, lasting for an extended period, sometimes hours.

Panic attacks are sudden, discrete periods of intense anxiety. They are often experienced in conjunction with anxiety disorders and other psychological conditions, although panic attacks are not always indicative of a mental disorder, nor are they uncommon. Panic Disorders are strikingly different from other types of anxiety disorders in that panic attacks are often sudden and unprovoked. They have also been found to run in families, and this may mean that inheritance genes plays a strong role in determining who will get it.

During the hyperventilation stage you might find you are experiencing some pretty scary symptoms and you could be heading towards a full-blown panic attack. The more experienced sufferers amongst you may be able to completely ride out a panic attack showing very little or even no obvious symptoms to those around them. Whilst others, notably first-time sufferers, may even call for emergency services. Many people who experience symptoms of a panic attack for the first time will fear they are having a heart attack, as the symptoms can seem very similar. Even health care professionals who have not seen one before can be mistaken.

So you have panic attacks but how can you help yourself? Well my 5 tips are:

1./ Your Breathing – During times of stress we neglect correct breathing. Around 60% of all panic attacks are associated with hyperventilation. Hyperventilation (over breathing) makes panic attacks worse. When you hyperventilate your body takes in too much oxygen, even though the sufferer believes they can’t breath. For the oxygen to work correctly in your body you need the correct mix of oxygen and carbon dioxide. Hyperventilation knocks the mix off balance. It has been common practice to advise people to take long deep breaths but this will only make you more anxious to relax you should inhale fully, staying relaxed, and then proceed without pausing to exhale slowly. Repeating as many times as possible. One of the other things panic attack sufferers have been taught is to breathe in and out of a paper bag. The idea behind this is that by breathing in and out of a paper bag you are inhaling more CO2. It does work but not as quickly or as effectively as some doctors think.

While it is not harmful to hyperventilation sufferers, it hasn’t actually been shown to help them either, what they do though is hurt sufferers of dangerous medical conditions that look like hyperventilation. Heart attacks and asthma can be commonly mistaken for hyperventilation.

2./ Posture – Posture effects breathing more than people think. As we get anxious and stressed we retreat into ourselves and almost start to physically curl up. It is totally a subconscious movement but its result is to compress the bodies internal organs. This means we take shallower breaths and the mix between CO2 and oxygen changes. You need to work at keeping a correct posture, get friends and family to remind you and look at how you are sitting at work.

3./ Diversion methods -

Talk to someone to take your mind off your thoughts.

If a panic attack comes on through the night don’t lie there thinking get up and do something, keep moving, eat, drink, watch TV.

Try not to sit down keep yourself active and walk around.

Tell yourself over and over that the panic attack can’t hurt you and it will subside.

Try to do something that occupies your mind, sing out loud, add up and subtract in your mind, recite nursery rhymes, anything to keep your mind working.

Splash your face with cold water.

4./ Familiarise yourself with panic attack symptoms.

5./ Check your beliefs about panic attacks, to see if you are fueling your panic attacks unnecessarily.

Hopefully some of the tips above will help you in your quest to manage your panic attacks.

How to you stop an anxiety attack? I do deep breathing and that helps some but not enough. It just goes away?

when it’s ready to. And the weirdest things will bring it on. Like today I had to make a phone call to the town office, I’ve talked to them before and it’s never bothered me. My stomach gets tied up in knots when I go to the same Dr I’ve been seeing for 7 years! Going to Wal Mart can do it sometimes and the last 2 weeks attending the same chruch I have been going to for 9 yrs gave me heart palpitations! I feel like I am shaking all over.. I can’t get into see the phyciatrist until Oct 18. So what kinds of things have to tried or heard of? Any home remedies or tricks? I have one med now for anxiety. And it does wonders for all the “What if’s” The other one made me so sleepy I couldn’t take it. But what’s so weird is that I didn’t feel this way BEFORE , I’ve been off it now for a few weeks.
So in the meantime, I’d really love to be able to calm down. I see a counsleor too starting Oct 3.
